Original Simmental
Original Simmental refers to traditional fullblood Simmental cattle from the Swiss Simme Valley and related central European Fleckvieh-type populations. These are large, dual-purpose cattle, commonly red or golden pied with a white face, white lower legs, and strong bone. Historically they were valued for milk, beef, and draft power on Alpine and lowland farms. The word original is used by some breeders to distinguish older fullblood or dual-purpose lines from modern composite, polled, or single-purpose Simmental programs; definitions vary by association.
Original Simmentals are kept by dairy-beef farms, suckler-cow herds, and breeders wanting traditional European genetics. Cows can raise heavy calves and produce useful volumes of milk, but their mature size means feed supply, body condition, and calving supervision deserve attention. Bulls are widely used for terminal or maternal crossbreeding, depending on the line. Prospective buyers should compare pedigree, frame, calving ease figures, horn or polled status, and whether the herd is selecting for dairy balance, beef performance, or preservation of old fullblood type.
