Pembroke
Pembroke cattle were a historic Welsh cattle breed from Pembrokeshire and nearby parts of southwest Wales. They were generally described as hardy, black, dual-purpose cattle, often short-legged and useful for both milk and beef under local farming conditions. In the early twentieth century, Pembroke cattle were combined with black cattle from North Wales to form the Welsh Black breed, so the old Pembroke is best understood as a foundation population rather than a separate modern breed commonly available today.
For researchers, breed historians, and Welsh Black breeders, Pembroke references can still matter. They help explain regional variation, old herd records, and the movement of Welsh cattle into town dairies and hill farms. Anyone looking for living pure Pembroke stock should be cautious, since most practical ownership today would involve Welsh Black cattle or historical conservation material rather than a distinct registered Pembroke herd.
