Red Chittagong
Red Chittagong cattle are an indigenous cattle breed from the Chittagong region of Bangladesh, known locally for a fairly consistent red coat, compact body, small horns, and humped zebu type. They are smaller than many imported dairy breeds but are well adapted to the humid, smallholder conditions of southeastern Bangladesh. The breed is valued for milk, calves, manure, and meat, with many families appreciating cows that can perform on local feed resources rather than relying entirely on high-cost concentrate feeding.
Most Red Chittagong cattle are managed in close village systems, often with cut-and-carry fodder, rice straw, crop byproducts, limited grazing, and careful household attention. Clean housing, foot care in wet seasons, parasite control, and steady access to water support both milk yield and fertility. Because the population has been affected by crossbreeding with larger dairy breeds, conservation herds and breeding programs in Bangladesh place importance on identifying true-type animals and maintaining pure lines. Anyone seeking Red Chittagong breeding stock should verify origin, cow family performance, and whether the animal comes from a recognized local conservation or improvement program.
