Red Gorbatov
Red Gorbatov cattle, called Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya in Russian sources, are a Russian red dairy and dual-purpose breed developed around the Gorbatov area of the Nizhny Novgorod region. They were formed from local cattle with influence from improved red stock, including Tyrolean-type animals. The breed is typically solid red, compact, and useful in constitution, with milk that can carry good fat content. It was shaped for village and regional farming in a cold continental climate rather than for the highest modern dairy yield.
Today Red Gorbatov is often treated as a rare local genetic resource as much as a commercial dairy breed. Herds need normal dairy care: dry bedding in winter, adequate forage, balanced minerals, udder-health monitoring, and breeding plans that protect fertility and functional conformation. Its practical appeal is in adapted cows for smaller farms, conservation herds, or moderate-input dairying where longevity matters. Buyers should confirm pedigree or source-herd records and avoid treating any red Russian cow as Red Gorbatov without supporting evidence.
