Red Polled Østland
The red polled Østland, often translated from Norwegian as østlandsk rødkolle or East Norwegian red polled cattle, is a traditional polled cattle breed from eastern Norway. It was shaped on small mixed farms where hornless red cows were useful for milk, calf rearing, and light farm work. Compared with modern Norwegian Red dairy cattle, it is usually smaller and less standardized, with value in its local adaptation, maternal traits, and historical genetics.
Today the breed is mainly kept by conservation herds, small farms, and people interested in native Nordic livestock. Management favors grass and hay systems, sturdy winter shelter, and careful mating plans because numbers are limited and relatedness can become a problem. Animals should be chosen for functional udders, sound feet, and calm handling as much as color and polled status. Buyers may need to work through Norwegian breed groups or gene-bank programs to verify identity and understand semen or animal availability.
