Salorn
Salorn cattle are a modern American beef composite based on Salers and Texas Longhorn breeding rather than an old regional landrace. Programs have commonly aimed to blend the growth, muscling, and maternal ability of Salers with the calving ease, fertility, longevity, and range toughness associated with Longhorn cattle. Because the breed is relatively uncommon, appearance can vary more than in long-established breeds; red, black, brindle, spotted, horned, and polled animals may all be seen depending on the line.
Salorn cattle fit commercial ranch settings where easy births, moderate cow size, and the ability to travel and graze are worth as much as maximum weaning weight. They are usually managed on pasture with normal beef-cow nutrition, mineral supplementation, and planned culling for udders, feet, and temperament. Buyers should ask about the generation, the Salers-to-Longhorn balance, horn status, and performance records, since the name alone does not guarantee a consistent type. Horned cattle also require fencing and handling facilities built with extra clearance and care.
