Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz cattle are a Texas-developed beef composite associated with King Ranch breeding, commonly described as one-half Santa Gertrudis, one-quarter Red Angus, and one-quarter Gelbvieh. That blend keeps some Brahman-derived heat tolerance through the Santa Gertrudis side while adding the maternal, polled, carcass, and growth traits sought from the Angus and Gelbvieh influence. Most animals are red and moderate to large framed, with a smooth beef type suited to commercial calf production rather than dairy or draft work.
These cattle are used in warm-climate ranch systems where fertility, early growth, and adaptability to Gulf Coast or subtropical conditions are important. They still need the basics of good beef management: adequate forage, mineral balance, shade or airflow in severe heat, and parasite control in humid regions. Because Santa Cruz is not as widespread as its parent breeds, seedstock buyers should confirm the breeder's program, generation, registration status, and expected progeny information when available. Crossbreeding plans should account for its composite background rather than treating it as a simple British breed.
