Selembu
Selembu is a Malaysian name for an experimental cattle type produced from domestic cattle and the seladang, or Malayan gaur. The word combines seladang with lembu, the Malay word for cattle. It is best understood as a cattle-gaur hybrid or research population rather than a widely standardized farm breed, and it has been associated with attempts to combine the size and tropical adaptation of wild gaur with the manageability and production traits of domestic cattle.
Selembu animals are not common private livestock and are most relevant to research stations, government breeding projects, and specialized conservation or production studies. Management requires strong fencing, experienced cattle handling, and careful records of parentage, fertility, and temperament. Because gaur ancestry can affect size, behavior, and breeding reliability, these hybrids are unsuitable for casual smallholder use. Any program working with them must also consider wildlife regulations, animal welfare, and the conservation status of wild gaur.
