Senepol
Senepol is a red, polled beef cattle breed developed on Saint Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. It combines ancestry from N'Dama, a West African taurine breed with tropical disease tolerance, and Red Poll cattle from Britain, which contributed polled heads, maternal ability, and beef traits. Senepols are Bos taurus cattle rather than zebu, yet they are valued in hot climates for a short slick coat, heat tolerance, workable temperament, and fertility under pasture conditions.
The breed is used in purebred herds and crossbreeding programs across the Caribbean, the Americas, northern Australia, and other warm regions. Producers often choose Senepol cattle where European beef breeds struggle with heat, ticks, or seasonal forage quality. They still need ordinary beef-cattle basics: mineral support, sound fencing, shade, parasite control, and selection for feet, udders, and calving ease. Buyers should look for cattle from lines tested under conditions similar to their own, since performance can vary between seedstock herds and climates.
