Texon
Texon is an American composite cattle name most often associated with crossing Texas Longhorn cattle with Devon-type British beef cattle. The intended animal combines Longhorn thrift, calving ease, and range sense with the muscling, red-meat qualities, and maternal traits of Devon cattle. It is a thinly documented and uncommon label compared with standardized commercial breeds, so Texon cattle may differ noticeably from herd to herd in horn, coat color, frame size, and the percentage of each foundation breed.
People considering Texon cattle should ask how the line was built and what selection goals the breeder uses. They are generally discussed as low-input beef or range cattle rather than dairy animals, and management resembles other hardy horned cattle: sound fencing, room to forage, mineral supplementation, and safe handling equipment matter. Because the name is not widely uniform, practical performance on a particular ranch is often more informative than the label alone.
