Thai Milking Zebu
Thai Milking Zebu is a tropical dairy cattle population developed in Thailand around zebu-type milk genetics and local adaptation. It is generally understood as a heat-tolerant alternative to high-percentage European dairy cattle, with Bos indicus traits such as a hump, loose skin, tick tolerance, and better ability to maintain condition in hot weather. Milk yield is usually moderate rather than extreme, but the cattle are valued for surviving and reproducing under conditions where temperate dairy breeds may struggle.
Small and medium farms may use Thai Milking Zebu cattle for household milk, local dairy collection, crossbreeding, or as hardy dams in tropical systems. They still need adequate forage, mineral balance, udder care, and controlled breeding if milk production is the goal. Selection often focuses on fertility, teat placement, temperament, and the ability to convert local feeds into dependable lactation. In very humid areas, parasite control and dry resting places are as important as the breed's natural heat tolerance.
