Tyrol Grey
Tyrol Grey, or Tyrolean Grey, is an Alpine cattle breed from Tyrol in Austria and South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is a dual-purpose breed with a grey coat, strong feet, and the kind of functional build needed for mountain pasture. The breed is associated with milk suitable for regional dairy products, useful beef calves, and cows that can work efficiently under steep, seasonal, forage-based conditions.
For keepers, Tyrol Grey cattle are practical where the farm asks cows to climb, graze, and remain fertile rather than simply stand in a high-input dairy system. Management should emphasize hoof soundness, udder quality, forage planning, and winter body condition. The breed's moderate size can be an advantage on alpine farms because it reduces pressure on feed and terrain. Buyers should check whether animals come from dairy, dual-purpose, or conservation-focused lines, since selection goals can differ.
