Valdostana Pezzata Nera
Valdostana Pezzata Nera is the black-pied cattle breed of Italy's Aosta Valley. It is part of the Valdostana cattle family and is closely tied to alpine farming, where cows move between valley holdings and high summer pasture. The black-and-white coat distinguishes it from the red-pied Valdostana and the chestnut Castana, while the breed shares the mountain durability and lively temperament valued in the region.
Farmers keep Valdostana Pezzata Nera cattle for milk, calves, meat, grazing, and local heritage. They are not simply dairy cows in a lowland sense; they must handle slopes, changing forage, and group movement. Facilities should account for horns and social ranking, and handlers should work quietly around cows that may be assertive. Selection should preserve feet, udder function, fertility, and breed identity, because small alpine breeds can be weakened by casual crossing even when the first-generation calves look productive.
