Valdostana Pezzata Rossa
Valdostana Pezzata Rossa is the red-pied branch of the Valdostana cattle of Italy's Aosta Valley, an Alpine dual-purpose breed kept for both milk and meat. The name means red spotted or red pied, and animals are typically red and white with a strong, compact frame, hard feet, and the balance needed for steep summer pastures. It belongs to a local group that also includes black-pied and chestnut Valdostana cattle, but the Pezzata Rossa has been selected more strongly for dairy usefulness while keeping mountain hardiness.
In its home region these cows are tied to grass-based dairying and the production of traditional cheeses such as Fontina, while calves and cull animals contribute beef. Farms using the breed value fertility, walking ability, and the capacity to make use of high-altitude grazing rather than high-input rations. Buyers should expect a working mountain cow rather than a specialized Holstein-style dairy animal; udder quality, feet, temperament, and recorded family performance matter when choosing breeding stock. Outside northern Italy it is mostly a conservation or niche farm breed.
