Xinjiang Brown
Xinjiang Brown is a Chinese dual-purpose cattle breed developed in Xinjiang from local Kazakh cattle crossed with Brown Swiss and related brown dairy-beef breeds such as Kostroma and Ala-Tau. It was recognized as a cultivated breed after decades of selection for a region with cold winters, dry conditions, and large grazing areas. The cattle are generally brown, functional, and intended to combine local adaptation with improved milk and beef performance.
Management of Xinjiang Brown cattle works best when both sides of the breed's purpose are respected. Dairy records, calf growth, fertility, and survival in the local climate all matter. Herds may use pasture, stored forage, and supplemental feeding depending on season, so cows need enough structure and body capacity to handle fluctuating conditions. Breeders should avoid selecting only for milk volume if it weakens the resilience that made the breed useful in Xinjiang in the first place.
