Yanbian
Yanbian cattle are a Chinese yellow cattle breed from the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin and nearby parts of northeastern China. They are linked to the cattle-keeping traditions of Korean communities in the region and are often compared with other East Asian yellow or Korean-type cattle. Animals are usually yellow to reddish brown, medium to large in frame, strong through the shoulder, and capable of working in cold winters and crop-based village farming systems.
The breed was historically valued for draft power in rice, maize, and mixed farms, but modern herds are more often managed for beef or as a maternal base for controlled crossbreeding. Yanbian cattle can use pasture, straw, and crop residues, though finishing cattle need better energy and protein if carcass quality is the goal. Winter shelter, sound feet, and calm handling remain important in the cold northeast climate. Purebred breeding programs focus on preserving adaptation, fertility, and meat quality, while commercial producers should be careful that larger terminal sires do not create calving problems in smaller cows.
