Cobb 500
Cobb 500 is a commercial broiler strain, not a heritage chicken breed in the backyard or exhibition sense. It was developed for fast meat production, efficient feed conversion, uniform growth, and use within integrated poultry systems. The birds are typically white broilers with genetics managed through parent and grandparent stock programs rather than open breeder flocks that ordinary keepers can maintain true to type.
Management of Cobb 500 chickens is highly practical and welfare-sensitive because growth is rapid. Chicks need clean litter, careful brooding temperatures, ventilation, constant access to water, and feed programs matched to age and body condition. Overfeeding, poor footing, heat, and crowding can create leg and health problems quickly. Smallholders raising them should plan processing dates, monitor weight gain, and understand that saving chicks for home breeding will not reproduce the controlled commercial line in a predictable way.
