Derbyshire Redcap
Derbyshire Redcap is an English heritage chicken from Derbyshire and nearby areas, named for its large rose comb that forms a red cap over the head. The breed is an active, relatively light dual-purpose fowl, often shown with rich dark plumage accented by red or chestnut tones depending on the standard. It has more of an old farm and foraging character than a heavy modern table-bird build.
Redcaps suit keepers who can give chickens room to move and enough fencing to manage active birds. They have been valued for eggs, but they are not a commercial layer substitute. The large comb should be firm and correct, while body size, vigor, and laying ability remain part of selection. Because the breed is uncommon, breeders should avoid narrowing lines for color alone and should track sources when exchanging hatching eggs or breeding birds.
