Dong Tao
The Dong Tao, or Ga Dong Tao, is a Vietnamese chicken breed from Dong Tao commune in Hung Yen province. Its massive, thickly scaled legs and feet have made it a status meat bird and a specialty in Vietnamese cuisine. Mature birds have a heavy body, broad head, red skin on the face and comb, and a slower, more deliberate build than commercial table chickens. The dramatic legs are a breed hallmark, but sound movement is still important.
Keeping Dong Tao chickens is different from managing ordinary layers. They need roomy pens, dry deep litter, and low perches or floor sleeping areas so heavy birds do not injure their legs. Growth is slow, egg production modest, and fertility can vary, so breeders usually hatch from proven, unrelated birds and cull for strength as well as leg size. Outside Vietnam, true stock can be scarce and expensive; buyers should ask for clear provenance rather than relying on photos of large legs alone.
