Dongxiang Green
Dongxiang green, often called Dongxiang green-shell or blue-shelled chicken, is a Chinese indigenous chicken associated with Dongxiang County in Jiangxi Province. The green in the name refers chiefly to the blue-green eggshell, not a green feather color. Many lines are dark-feathered and fibromelanotic, with black skin, bones, or internal tissues, which has made the breed useful in studies of eggshell color, pigmentation, and native poultry genetics. It remains a farm and genetic-resource bird rather than a common Western show breed.
Small flocks are kept much like other light native chickens, with secure housing, outdoor range where safe, and attention to parasite control in humid conditions. Egg numbers are usually lower than commercial hybrids, but shell color and local adaptation are the main reasons people maintain them. Breeders should select for consistent green shells, sound bodies, fertility, and dark-tissue traits where they are part of the line. Outside China, names can be confused with generic green-egg layers, so provenance matters.
