Robusta Maculata

Robusta Maculata is an Italian breed of domestic chicken developed in the Veneto region during the mid twentieth century, when poultry stations were trying to create heavier farm birds for eggs and meat. The name means spotted robust, and the breed is associated with a strong dual-purpose body, yellow shanks, and variegated plumage rather than the light, tight build of Mediterranean laying breeds. It belongs to the small group of modern Italian conservation breeds linked with the Rovigo poultry breeding program, alongside birds such as Robusta Lionata and Ermellinata di Rovigo.

Today Robusta Maculata is mainly kept by smallholders and rare-breed breeders rather than commercial producers. It can suit free-range or yard systems where a slower-growing table chicken and a useful layer are valued, but it still needs the same dry housing, predator protection, and balanced feed as other heavy chickens. Breeding flocks are usually selected for vigor, body depth, correct leg color, and the spotted appearance implied by the name. Because numbers are limited, buyers should look for clearly identified stock and avoid assuming any mottled Italian cross is the breed.
