Taoyuan
The Taoyuan chicken is a Taiwanese breed associated with Taoyuan and is known as a large, meat-type native chicken. It has been valued for traditional table qualities and local adaptation rather than for the rapid growth of industrial broilers. The birds are usually substantial, with a strong frame and a slower-growing character that fits specialty and small-farm production.
Taoyuan chickens need management that supports body size without causing leg or conditioning problems. Provide good footing, space, shade, clean water, and feed that encourages steady growth. Breeders should select for frame, fertility, livability, and the meat qualities expected of the breed, while recording source and family lines. Because the name has regional value, buyers should confirm that birds come from maintained Taoyuan stock and not from unrelated large Taiwanese crosses.
