Climbing Mantella
Mantella laevigata
The climbing mantella lives in lowland rainforest in northeastern Madagascar, often around bamboo. Its green-yellow head and back contrast with black sides and limbs, and enlarged toe pads help it climb. Specialist keepers provide humid planted terrariums with vertical branches, shelters, small insects and water-filled cavities. It lays eggs at small reservoirs, and females supply unfertilized eggs to the developing tadpoles. This climbing habit sets it apart from the more terrestrial mantellas.
