Common Spadefoot Toad
Pelobates fuscus
This European burrowing frog is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers. Its rounded body has mottled brown markings, vertical pupils and a hardened digging spur on each hindfoot. Keepers provide deep, loose substrate, moist retreats, clean water and suitable invertebrate prey, preserving space for natural burrowing. Females lay eggs in water, and the large tadpoles develop there before becoming frogs. Despite its common name, it is not a true toad like the warty common European toad.
