Hypo

Hypo is short for hypomelanistic, a corn snake morph that reduces black pigment without removing it completely. In a visual hypo Pantherophis guttatus, black saddle borders may appear brown, gray, or translucent, allowing the reds and oranges to look cleaner and brighter than in a normal corn. In hobby use, hypo usually means the classic Hypo A gene unless another hypo-type mutation is named. That distinction matters because several separate corn snake genes can create reduced-melanin appearances.

Care is the same as for other corn snakes, and hypo animals retain dark pigment, so they are not equivalent to amelanistic red-eyed corns. The morph is popular in breeding because it changes the look of many combinations, including ghost when paired with anerythristic and various brighter red or orange projects. Since expression can overlap with naturally light normal corns, documented parentage is helpful. Buyers planning to breed should confirm which hypo gene is present rather than relying only on the word hypo in an advertisement.
