Crested Porcupine
Hystrix cristata
A large ground-dwelling rodent from Africa and Italy, with dark bristles, a raised head crest and long black-and-white quills. The North African form pictured is very similar in appearance to Indian crested porcupine. Zoo mammal teams provide secure ground enclosures, digging opportunities, sheltered dens and plant foods for these nocturnal animals. Females give birth to small litters of live young. Quills are a defensive hazard and are not thrown.
