Peru Dwarf Red Leg Tarantula
Cyriocosmus aueri
The Peru dwarf red leg tarantula is a small spider from the Peruvian Amazon. Adult females have a dark gray to black carapace and upper legs, lighter brown outer leg segments and a light brown heart-shaped patch on a black abdomen. Despite the trade name, it is not uniformly red-legged. Unlike several Cyriocosmus, the abdomen lacks lateral stripes. Hobbyists keep it singly in a secure enclosure with diggable substrate, a retreat and water. Avoid handling and defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in silk sacs.
