Danube Crested Newt
Triturus dobrogicus
A slender crested newt of the Danube lowlands, this species has a dark, spotted body and an orange belly with black markings. Breeding males develop an especially tall, jagged back crest. Females lay individual eggs folded into aquatic leaves. Specialist keepers provide cool breeding water and sheltered, damp land for the seasonal land phase. Its long trunk and short limbs distinguish it from the more robust great crested newt. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
