Desert Locust
Schistocerca gregaria
The desert locust is a large, short-antennaed grasshopper whose behavior and appearance change with population density. Solitary adults can be gray-brown with mottled wings; crowded populations can form migrating swarms. Research colonies use warm, ventilated, escape-resistant enclosures, climbing surfaces and fresh grasses or leafy plants with bran.
Females lay egg pods in moist substrate. In the United States, movement requires USDA APHIS authorization, and research colonies are maintained under permit and containment requirements.
