English Foxhound

The English foxhound is a large scent hound developed in Britain for pack hunting, with a history shaped by organized kennels, hunts, and long-distance work over open country. It has a deep chest, strong straight legs, a level back, and a short weather-resistant coat most often seen in hound colors such as black, white, and tan. Unlike showier companion hounds, the traditional English foxhound was bred first for nose, stamina, voice, and the ability to work politely within a pack.

Life with one outside a hunt kennel takes planning. English foxhounds are social, athletic dogs that may find scents more persuasive than their handlers, so secure fencing, leash discipline, and patient recall training matter. They often do best with canine company and regular mileage, whether through trail work, hound exercise, or other structured activity. Their short coats are simple to maintain, but ears and feet need attention after wet or rough ground.
