Grand Bleu de Gascogne

The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is an old French scenthound from Gascony, known among hound people for its deep voice, cold nose, and blue-looking coat. The color comes from dense black mottling and ticking over white, often with black patches and tan points, rather than from a solid blue pigment. Tall, long-eared, and somewhat solemn in expression, it was used in packs for large game such as wolf, boar, and deer. The breed also influenced several other blue-ticked hounds, including lines that helped shape hunting dogs beyond France.

Grand Bleus are usually best understood as working pack hounds, not casual backyard companions. They need space, distance exercise, and secure containment, and their slow, persistent trailing style can carry them far from home if a scent opens. The short coat is easy to maintain, but the heavy ears, feet, and skin folds around the head benefit from routine checks after wet or thorny country. Sound hips, good weight, and bloat awareness matter in a deep-chested large dog. Outside established hunting circles, availability may be limited and temperaments can vary by kennel.
