Schillerstövare

The Schillerstövare, called the Schiller hound in English, is a Swedish scent hound developed in the late nineteenth century and named for breeder Per Schiller. It was created from Scandinavian and continental hound stock for hunting hare and fox, usually by following one animal and giving voice on the trail. The breed has a clean athletic outline, drop ears, and a short tan coat with a black mantle. It is traditionally valued as a solo hunter with drive, nose, and endurance in northern conditions.

A Schillerstövare is best suited to people who understand scenthounds and can provide regular, vigorous work. Even a companion dog needs fenced exercise areas and careful leash management, because a fresh trail can override casual recall. The short coat is easy to maintain, but ears should be checked after hunting or wet weather. At home, many are steady and people-oriented, while kennel isolation without activity can lead to frustration and noise. The breed is rare outside Sweden and parts of northern Europe, so buyers should ask about field ability, temperament, and health screening.
