Teddy Roosevelt Terrier

The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a low-set American terrier that developed from short-legged rat terrier and feist farm dogs. It shares much of its background with the Rat Terrier, but the body is rectangular, the legs are noticeably shorter, and the job was practical: killing rats, treeing small game, and living close to the household. Smooth coats, alert eyes, and white-based patterns with black, tan, chocolate, or other markings are common; the modern name honors Theodore Roosevelt rather than a breed he formally created.

These are busy, people-oriented dogs that need more than lap time. Daily play, scent work, training games, and a secure yard help channel a terrier that may chase rodents, cats, poultry, or wildlife if given the chance. The coat is simple to maintain, but nails, teeth, weight, and knees deserve attention in any small active breed.
