Dorcus antaeus
Dorcus antaeus
Dorcus antaeus is a large black stag beetle from South and Southeast Asia. Major males have a broad head and heavy curved jaws; females have much smaller jaws. Captive females lay eggs in firm, white-rotted hardwood, and the larvae develop in decaying wood, prepared fermented hardwood substrate or suitable fungal culture.
Larvae are best housed separately because crowded individuals may attack one another. Breeders generally keep this species cooler than tropical Dorcus and supervise pairings because males can injure females.
