Dorcus hopei
Dorcus hopei
Dorcus hopei is an East Asian stag beetle widely bred for the enlarged jaws of its males. Large males have long, swordlike jaws, while smaller males and females look noticeably different. The larvae feed in decaying hardwood; captive cultures also use prepared wood flakes or suitable fungal substrate. Adults accept beetle jelly and soft fruit. Breeding follows an egg, larva, pupa and adult life cycle. This entry follows the current species treatment rather than combining it with Dorcus curvidens.
