Formosan Long-fanged Stag Beetle
Dorcus schenklingi
The Formosan long-fanged stag beetle is native to Taiwan, where it lives around mature broadleaf trees and cavities in mountain forests. Large males have unusually long, slender jaws with a strong inner tooth just ahead of the midpoint. Adults feed on tree sap and ripe fruit, while larvae develop in decaying wood. Captive females lay eggs in firm, white-rotted hardwood. Taiwan lists this species as a Category II protected animal, so captive provenance and the rules governing collection and trade matter.
