Purple Pink Toe Tarantula
Avicularia purpurea
The purple pink toe tarantula occurs in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Adults have an intense purple sheen on the carapace and legs and a velvety black abdomen, unlike the golden-brown Avicularia merianae. It is an arboreal spider that makes silk retreats in tree cavities and other sheltered places. Tarantula hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, room to web, a water dish and good ventilation. Avoid handling and contact with defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in a silk sac.
