Ember Roach
Pycnoscelus striatus
The ember roach is a shy, burrowing Pycnoscelus kept by specialist breeders. Its warm reddish-brown adults recall glowing embers as they retreat beneath the substrate. Colonies use organic digging substrate, cover and varied food, with ventilation and a moist refuge. Females retain their egg cases and release live young. Adults can climb, so the enclosure must close securely. Older references spell its scientific name Pycnoscelus striata; the current accepted spelling is striatus.
