Eurasian Beaver
Castor fiber
A large semiaquatic rodent of Eurasian fresh waters, with dense brown fur, webbed hindfeet and a flat scaled tail. It feeds on woody plants and aquatic vegetation and builds lodges or bank dens. Zoo and conservation teams need an aquatic habitat with accessible banks, woody material and secure shelter. Females give birth to live kits. US ESA endangered status covers the Mongolian subspecies Castor fiber birulai, rather than the whole species.
