Eurasian Red Squirrel
Sciurus vulgaris
This Eurasian tree squirrel has a bushy tail, pale belly and, especially in winter, long ear tufts. Natural coats vary from red to dark brown or black; the portrait shows a red winter animal. It lives in woodland and eats seeds, nuts and other plant foods. Zoo and wildlife teams provide secure climbing space, nest boxes and opportunities to forage.
Females give birth to litters of live young. It lacks the longitudinal stripes of Swinhoe's striped squirrel. Coat colors and winter ear tufts overlap with Japanese squirrels, so color alone does not establish the species.
