European Fire-Bellied Toad
Bombina bombina
This small European frog lives around shallow wetlands and is kept by amphibian hobbyists. Its dark upperparts contrast with a red-orange belly marked in black. Keepers provide enclosures with clean shallow water, accessible land, cover and small invertebrate prey. It lays eggs in water, and the young pass through a tadpole stage. Its skin secretions are irritating, so handling is best kept minimal. The belly color distinguishes it from the yellow-bellied toad, though the two can look similar from above.
