European Polecat
Mustela putorius
The wild European polecat is distinct from the domestic ferret. Its dark guard hairs show creamy underfur, and a dark eye mask contrasts with a pale muzzle and ear edges. It uses woodland edges, wetland cover and dens while hunting small animals. Zoo and wildlife teams provide secure ground accommodation with hiding places and enrichment. Females give birth to litters of live kits. Its facial mask differs from the unmasked pine and stone martens.
