Koi

Koi fancy guppies are color varieties of Poecilia reticulata bred to suggest the pattern of koi carp, usually with a red or orange head and tail set against a pale, white, cream, or lightly colored body. Some lines are black-eyed, while others involve albino or red-eyed genetics, and related names may include red koi, koi tuxedo, or albino koi guppy. The appeal is the strong contrast rather than any close relationship to koi fish. Males carry most of the finished look, but females are important for passing the head color and body clarity to fry.

Koi guppies are kept like other fancy guppies in warm, well-filtered freshwater aquariums with gentle companions. Color quality depends on both genetics and condition, so a varied diet and low-stress housing help keep orange and red areas from looking washed out. Breeding focuses on a clean pale body, strong facial color, and healthy fin shape. Lines that include albino traits may need more deliberate pairing because recessive genes can disappear in mixed colonies. For buyers, young males may not show full contrast until they mature.
