Leopard
Leopard fancy guppies are Poecilia reticulata strains selected for dark spots or rosetted markings, most often on a yellow, orange, blue, or multicolored caudal fin. The spots may also extend into the dorsal fin or body, depending on the line. In casual aquarium trade, leopard can overlap with tiger, snakeskin, and mosaic labels, but a good leopard guppy has separated spot-like markings rather than a continuous lace or net pattern. Males are the showier sex, while females commonly carry the pattern genes with little visible decoration.
They fit well in planted community aquariums if tankmates are gentle and water quality is steady, because long spotted tails are easily torn or nipped. Breeders select for clear spotting, balanced tail shape, and strong base color; random crosses may turn the pattern into peppering, stripes, or a broken mosaic. Fry from leopard lines can vary widely, so culling for health and selecting only the best-marked young males are part of maintaining the strain. Buyers should look for active fish with intact fins rather than choosing only the boldest pattern.
