Red
Red fancy guppies are color strains of Poecilia reticulata selected for red pigment in the tail, dorsal fin, body, or the entire fish. The term ranges from a red-tailed guppy to full red and albino full red lines, and it may also appear in names such as red dragon, red tuxedo, or red cobra. Mature males show the clearest scarlet to orange-red coloring; females are usually larger and less intense, although well-developed lines may have red tails and noticeable body color.
Diet can support red color, especially foods containing natural carotenoids, but genetics set the ceiling. Red guppies breed readily, and males are active courters, so colonies need cover and enough space for females to avoid constant attention. People maintaining a line usually grow out extra fry before choosing pairs, since young fish can change shade as they mature. To keep a full red line from washing out, avoid casual mixing with unrelated red or bicolor guppies unless the goal is an experimental cross.
