Florida Sand Cockroach
Arenivaga floridensis
The Florida sand cockroach is a burrowing Arenivaga of Florida scrub and sand-ridge habitats. Adult males have wings; females are wingless and vary from nearly black to pale cream with dark markings. Specialist colonies use deep, leaf-rich digging substrate, warm conditions and strong ventilation, with a carefully managed moisture gradient.
Females produce egg cases. Excess moisture in stagnant housing can harm colonies. Female color and outline vary, so they do not securely distinguish this species from every relative.
