Fringed Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria ornata
The fringed ornamental tarantula is a large tree-dwelling spider from Sri Lanka. Adults have gray and dark dorsal patterns, fringed upper legs and broad black bands beneath the rear thighs, unlike the narrow bands of P. fasciata. Specialist hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, a secure retreat, ventilation and water.
Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and prolonged muscle cramps, so avoid handling. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. It is US-listed endangered, with regulated trade and interstate commerce, and CITES Appendix II regulates international trade.
