Attappady Black
The Attappady Black is an Indian goat from the Attappady region of Kerala, closely associated with hill communities and smallholder meat production. As the name suggests, black coat color is a defining feature, though the real value of the breed is its adaptation to the humid foothill environment. The goats are typically compact, active browsers that can use rough vegetation and village grazing. They are often discussed as a local genetic resource rather than a commodity meat cross.
Good Attappady Black management includes dry housing during wet weather, attention to internal parasites, and protection for kids in small household herds. Because the breed is tied to a specific region, conserving it means keeping locally adapted females and not replacing them entirely with larger outside bucks. Farmers may select for kid survival, mothering, sound feet, and growth on available feed. Buyers should be aware that authentic stock depends on source and community context, not only a black coat.
