Barbari
The Barbari is a small to medium goat from northern India and Pakistan, often associated with Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, and nearby areas. It has a compact body, short ears, alert expression, and coats that are commonly white with reddish or tan spotting, though variation exists. Barbari goats are valued for meat, milk, and prolific reproduction in smallholder systems. Their size makes them easier to keep where space and feed are limited.
Good Barbari management emphasizes kid survival and steady nutrition rather than simply pushing for larger adults. The breed can do well in semi-intensive systems with stall feeding, browsing, and careful hygiene, but overcrowding raises disease and parasite risks. Breeders often value does that twin, milk enough for their kids, and breed back reliably. Buyers should look for sound legs, correct mouths, healthy udders, and a source herd that records kidding performance, because productivity in Barbari goats depends strongly on maternal reliability.
