Carpathian
The Carpathian goat is a mountain and foothill goat type associated with the Carpathian region, especially local Romanian Carpatina goats and related landrace populations. Rather than a highly uniform show breed everywhere it is named, it is best understood as a hardy regional dairy and mixed-use goat. Animals are commonly medium sized, sure-footed, often horned, and variable in coat color and hair length, reflecting selection in village and transhumant systems.
Carpathian goats are kept for milk used fresh or in farm cheeses, with kids and cull animals also contributing meat. They fit extensive grazing, brushy slopes, and seasonal movement better than intensive confinement alone, but winter hay, weatherproof shelter, and hoof care remain important in cold, wet mountain climates. Buyers should clarify whether a seller means a registered Carpatina-type goat, a local landrace animal, or a general goat from the Carpathian area.
